Terry was very professional and prompt. I learned a lot while he was fixing our furnace for us. We called about an issue around 4pm, and they sent Terry out the same day to diagnose it. He got the parts the following morning, and was finished within 30 minutes of arriving and we had our heat back before noon. Thank you Terry for the service, and thank you Rita for answering my call and getting someone out same day!

AC Stopped Working? Check These 5 Things First

A few causes take two minutes to rule out and can save you a service call. If none of these fixes it, call us and tell the dispatcher what you already checked. It speeds up the diagnosis.

  1. Thermostat.

Make sure it’s set to Cool and at least 3 degrees below the room temperature. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.

  2. Breakers.

Your AC usually has two breakers in the panel, one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit. Reset a tripped breaker once.

If it trips again, leave it off and call us. A breaker that keeps tripping points to an electrical fault.
  3. Air filter.

A clogged filter chokes airflow and can freeze the indoor coil. Swap it for a clean one.

  4. Ice on the copper line or indoor unit.

Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On for a few hours so the ice melts.

Running Cool on a frozen system can damage the compressor.
  5. Water in the drain pan.

Many Richmond homes have the indoor unit in the attic. When the condensate drain clogs, a safety switch shuts the AC off to keep water out of your ceiling.

If the pan under the unit holds water, the drain line is blocked. Turn the system off and call.

The AC Repairs We Make Most Often in Richmond

Most no cooling calls in Fort Bend County come down to a handful of parts. Here’s what each one looks like from inside your house.

Problem What you notice How we fix it
Failed capacitor Outdoor fan won’t spin, unit hums, AC won’t start Replace the capacitor, then test the fan and compressor motors
Burned contactor Outdoor unit won’t start, or won’t shut off Replace the contactor and check the wiring for heat damage
Clogged condensate drain Water in the pan, AC shuts off, ceiling stain Clear and flush the line, test the safety float switch
Refrigerant leak Warm air, ice on the lines, long run times, higher bills Locate the leak, repair it, recharge to the manufacturer’s spec
Frozen evaporator coil Ice on the indoor unit, weak airflow Thaw the coil, then fix the cause (airflow or low refrigerant)
Dirty condenser coil AC runs nonstop, power bill climbs Clean the outdoor coil, check refrigerant pressures
Blower motor failure Outdoor unit runs but no air from the vents Replace the motor or its capacitor
Thermostat or control board fault Blank screen, AC turns on and off every few minutes Repair or replace, check low voltage wiring
Compressor failure Loud start, tripped breaker, warm air Test the compressor, then lay out repair and replacement costs side by side

If your AC smells musty, burnt or like rotten eggs, read what each AC smell means. A burning smell means turn the system off at the breaker and call.

Why Air Conditioners Break Down in Richmond Homes

Richmond is hard on air conditioners. Here’s what we see every summer, and what we check for on every repair visit.

A long, hot cooling season.

Summers here hold above 95 degrees with heavy humidity, and most systems run from spring well into October. More run hours means more wear on capacitors, contactors and fan motors. Heat is the number one reason capacitors fail.

Humidity fills the drain line.

On a humid day your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air. That water carries dust and algae that slowly clog the condensate line.

We flush the drain and test the float switch on every visit, because a failed switch in an attic unit means water through the ceiling.

Attic air handlers.

Most two story homes in Pecan Grove, Long Meadow Farms, Harvest Green, Veranda and Aliana have the indoor unit in the attic, where summer temperatures run far above the outdoor reading. That heat stresses electrical parts and can make ductwork sweat.

If your upstairs never cools down, see our guide to hot spots in two story Richmond homes and why ductwork sweats.

Shifting clay soil.

Fort Bend County sits on Beaumont Clay, which swells when it’s wet and shrinks during dry spells. Over time that movement can tilt the pad under your outdoor unit. A tilted unit strains the refrigerant line connections and can throw off the drain line slope.

We check the pad and the line set every time we’re out.

Storms and power surges.

Summer thunderstorms and grid outages can damage control boards, contactors and compressors. If your AC quits after a storm, don’t keep resetting it. Call for a check before the problem spreads to a bigger part.

Flood water.

Richmond sits along the Brazos River. If water ever reached your outdoor unit, keep the system off until a technician has checked the electrical parts.

How an AC Repair Visit Works

  1. You call or book online.

We give you an arrival window, usually the same day if you call in the morning.

  2. We diagnose the whole system.

The technician checks the electrical parts, refrigerant pressures, airflow, drain line and thermostat. A failed capacitor is often a symptom of a weak motor, so we don’t stop at the first bad part.

  3. You see photos and a written price.

We show you photos of what we found and give you repair options at a fixed price. Nothing starts until you approve it.

Here’s why we document every job with photos.

  4. We make the repair.

Our trucks carry the common parts, so most repairs take 1 to 3 hours and finish in one visit.

  5. We test before we leave.

We measure the temperature drop across the coil, check the motor amp draw and confirm the drain is flowing.

What the 2026 Refrigerant Rules Mean for Your Repair

Your R-410A system can still be repaired and recharged. That isn’t changing.

Here’s what has changed:
  • New systems use new refrigerants.

Since January 1, 2025, new home AC equipment is built for lower impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. These can’t be added to an R-410A system. They aren’t a direct swap.

  • R-410A is getting more expensive.

Production is being cut back under federal rules, so refrigerant repairs on R-410A systems will cost more each year.

  • R-22 systems are the costly ones.

R-22 hasn’t been produced since 2020, and recharges rely on recovered supply. Most systems installed before 2010 use it. A large leak on an R-22 system is usually the point where replacement makes more sense than repair.

We’ll tell you which refrigerant your system uses and what that means for the cost before you decide anything.

Repair or Replace? A Straight Answer

Temper Mechanical Air & Heat technician with service truck in Richmond, TX

Repair usually makes sense when your AC is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a new system.

Replacement is usually the better choice when:

  • the system is 12 to 15 years old or older (Gulf Coast heat and humidity shorten AC life)
  • it uses R-22 and has a refrigerant leak
  • the compressor or indoor coil has failed and the parts warranty has expired
  • you’re paying for repairs every summer and your bills keep climbing

Check your warranty first.

Many systems in newer neighborhoods like Harvest Green, Veranda and Long Meadow Farms are still within the manufacturer’s parts warranty, and many brands cover parts for up to 10 years when the system was registered. Send us your model and serial number and we’ll check before we quote.

If the part is covered, you only pay for labor.

If replacement is the smarter move, we’ll explain why and show you the numbers.

AC Repair FAQs

Call Temper Mechanical Air & Heat at (346) 485-8142. We’re based at 6115 FM 762 in Richmond, offer same day AC repair in most cases and take emergency calls 24/7 across Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Katy and the rest of Fort Bend County.

Most AC repairs in Richmond cost $150 to $600. A capacitor runs $150 to $400, a clogged drain $75 to $200, and a refrigerant leak repair $250 to $1,500. Compressor or coil replacement costs $800 to $2,800. Our $75 to $150 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.

Most calls get a same day appointment when you call in the morning. Emergency calls are answered 24/7.

The most common causes are a dirty air filter, a frozen indoor coil, a failed capacitor that stops the outdoor fan, low refrigerant from a leak, and a dirty outdoor coil. Change the filter and check for ice first. If the air is still warm, call for a diagnosis. See 9 hidden reasons your AC isn’t cooling.

Almost always because the condensate drain line is clogged with algae and dust, so water backs up into the pan. In attic units it can soak the ceiling. Turn the AC off and have the line cleared and the float switch tested. If your system uses a pump, see why condensate pumps stop working.

Yes. Existing R-410A systems can still be legally repaired and recharged. New systems now use refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, and R-410A will keep getting more expensive as production drops, so refrigerant repairs on older systems will cost more over time.

It depends on the repair. A capacitor, contactor or drain repair on a 12 year old system is usually worth it. A compressor, coil or major refrigerant leak usually isn’t, especially on an R-22 system. We give you both prices so you can compare.

Ask for the company’s TDLR license number, which starts with TACLA or TACLB, and look it up on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website. Make sure the status shows as active. Temper Mechanical’s license is [TACLA #]. Here’s our checklist for choosing an HVAC contractor.

At least once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. Because the cooling season here is so long, a second check in late summer helps if you have pets, allergies or an older system. See signs your system needs a tune up.
